Luck of the (Redheaded) Irish

On St. Patty’s Day, it’s a funny thing being a redhead. I get more smiles from strangers than I did when I was 8 months pregnant (one of my favorite side effects of expecting).

I’m not complaining. I love smiles and I especially love to be smiled at, but I’m just saying that it’s an interesting phenomenon. Take for example yesterday, I didn’t even wear green so as to avoid the overt display of Irish pride, which the other 364 days of the year I don’t seem to have. Wearing green would seem obnoxious. But everywhere I went, people were looking at me and smiling, as if I were wearing a green top hat, carting around a bag of gold dublins, and taking sips from my cup of frothy green beer.

I love it. I started making excuses to run more errands. Sure – I definitely need to go to the post office to get more stamps because that roll of 100 may run out in June. Absolutely – I need to go back to the grocery store (for a second time) because I really needed flowers for the kitchen. And yes – hi there Starbucks. In fact I do need another chai latte to get me through this super intense day.

It was a great day. Thank you Saint Patrick. I’m not sure green beer and nods to red-heads is what was in mind when it was decided to celebrate your arrival in Ireland, but I’m sure grateful.
